As technology improves and digital communication becomes an ever increasingly important part of everyday life, the demand for Government and Educational Institutions to provide protection for citizens from Cyber based attacks, also increases, often at an alarming rate. The need for collaboration between branches of Government, the Education Community, and Private Industry has reached the point where sharing data, best practices, and Cyber Strategy is no longer an option.

This year’s Cybersecurity event will focus on overcoming the Cyber Threats facing Local Government, School Districts, and Higher Education. By bringing together representatives from all facets of Public Sector, this forum will create an opportunity for idea sharing, collaborative strategy development, and the creation of a Community of Interest that will ultimately benefit the People of California.

This Year’s Educational Tracks will include:

  • Developing and Leveraging Threat Intelligence
  • Dealing with Privacy and Incident Response
  • Funding a Cyber Security Strategy
  • Designing an Effective Cyber Security Program
  • Exploring the Latest Innovations in Cyber Technology
  • Developing Cyber Talent and a Security Savvy Workforce
  • SCADA/ICS Focus – Protecting the Critical Infrastructure

In addition, attendees will have an opportunity to attend a panel discussion with Experts from Leading Security Command Centers (SOCs), SANS Training, as well as Security Workshops designed to give hands on education in Cyber Security Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures.

As our digital environment expands, the issues of cybersecurity loom larger every year. People are becoming even more connected to each other and the environment around them – the dawn of Smart Cities is upon us and the challenge of protecting information is increasingly difficult. Therefore, to address our shared cybersecurity concerns, it is important for us as a professional community to improve our awareness, increase our knowledge, improve our communication, and develop our relationships to meet head on the realities of the world we now share.

This year’s Cybersecurity event will focus on the unique challenges that face Local Governments, while advancing cybersecurity awareness and delivering the educational curriculum for which the Cybersecurity Symposium is known. Attendees will return to their organizations better equipped to take action and be more effective in the following areas:

  • Securing Smart Cities: Cybersecurity approach for cities of today and tomorrow.
  • Cybersecurity Governance: Policies and processes to manage and monitor regulatory, legal, risk, environmental, and operational requirements.
  • Awareness and Training: Providing personnel and partners cybersecurity awareness education to excel in the performance of their cybersecurity related duties.
  • Information Protection: Manage information and records (data) consistent with the risk strategy to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information.
  • Recovery Planning: Execute recovery processes and procedures to ensure timely restoration of systems or assets affected by cybersecurity events.
  • Cloud Security and Privacy: Information protection and privacy management in the cloud.
  • Risk Management: Establish priorities, constraints, risk tolerances, and assumptions to support operational risk decisions.
  • ICS/SCADA: Protecting critical infrastructure operations that are essential to our citizens.

With the public and private sector working together to create content, the workforce has benefited in terms of exposure to education and training that otherwise they may not have gotten. This summit is in its second year, and 70% of the attendees were new to the summit. Not only are IT personnel invited to this summit, but the department’s program areas are invited as well in order to better educate them. Through this exposure, the Department of Technology has been successful in launching our Project Academy Series which takes a deeper dive into the content that is discussed in these forums. The better educated and trained workforce, the more successful we will be in delivering projects for the State of CA.”
