Title: Executive Director
Sean D. Young, PhD, MS is a UCLA Medical School Professor and the Executive Director of the University of California Institute for Prediction Technology (UCIPT). UCIPT a UC-wide initiative designed to study how social data such as social media, wearable devices, and online search data can be used to predict real-world problems such as disease outbreaks, online safety issues, and crime. Trained as a behavioral psychologist, Dr. Young’s research focuses on two main areas: 1) using social “big data” to monitor and predict real-world problems, and 2) designing and testing technologies to change human behavior. He developed the Harnessing Online Peer Education (HOPE) intervention, an online community intervention that has been used to change people’s HIV, general health/stress, and prescription drug-related risk behaviors. In partnership with government agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and industry, he and Institute researchers developed tools that can monitor and predict HIV and sexually transmitted disease, student health and well being, and crime. Dr. Young teaches a course each Spring quarter on how to quickly build low-cost technologies to address global health and poverty-related issues.
